NEWPORT BEACH - Mar 8, 2017

It’s time for proud boat owners to show off their hard work and love of wooden boats. The Fourth Annual Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival at the Balboa Yacht Club will be the must-go-to place for gathering 50 of the best wooden hull boats on the West Coast the weekend of June 10-11, 2017. Applications can now be submitted for entry into the Festival.

Sail, power, and human-powered “show-ready” boats of all sizes are eligible. Those accepted will be displayed in the water and on land at the waterfront club. Boats will arrive on Friday, June 9 with the public display is Saturday, June 10, and Heritage Boat Parade and Sail By on Sunday, June 11. Call (949) 673-3515 for more information or download an application from the website newportbeachwoodenboatfestival.com. The “Early Bird” application deadline is 5:00 pm PST, Friday, April 14, 2017. Pay only $50– and save $50–by entering early. After April 14, 2017, the boat application fee is $100.

The weekend starts with the first ever RyboRendezvous on the West Coast honoring the “Stradivarius” of sportfishing boats as the featured marque for 2017. Pat Rybovich, the daughter of boatbuilder and designer Tommy Rybovich, is the featured speaker at 5:30 Saturday on her family’s American company that created the modern sportfishing yacht in the 1940s. She has documented the rich history in the book Rybovich: The Stuff of Legend, and is also writing a screenplay. If you have a Rybovich, you’ll want to be included in this special weekend. This speaking event is sure to be especially enjoyed by the sportfishing community.

Space is limited, so don’t miss the deadline. The committee will make its selection by May 1, 2017 from the completed applications and invite the chosen boats to participate in the fun-filled weekend.
Admission is free to the public who can park off site and ride the Admission is free to the public who can celebrate the maritime heritage of Newport Harbor and wooden boats past and present with an extraordinary day for the whole family. The 95-year-old Balboa Yacht Club created the event in the tradition of waterfront festivals by providing a yearly gathering place for boaters and shipwrights to display their extraordinary watercraft for dreamers, admirers and boating enthusiasts.
