NEWPORT BEACH - Mar 8, 2017
The Fourth Annual Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival is the weekend of June 10-11, 2017.
Admission is free to the public who can celebrate the maritime heritage of Newport Harbor and wooden boats past and present with a fun-filled day for the whole family. The 95-year-old Balboa Yacht Club created the event in the tradition of waterfront festivals by providing a yearly gathering place for boaters and shipwrights to display their extraordinary watercraft for dreamers, admirers and boating enthusiasts. The 2017 Festival features a concours d’elegance of 50 exceptional wooden boats of all shapes and sizes in the water and on land.
Internationally known fine artist Scott Kennedy painted the artwork for the 2017 commemorative posters and program. His original artwork and other unique items will tantalize Festival goers during the silent auction, which raises funds for youth sailing.
The first RyboRendezvous on the West Coast will honor the “Stradivarius” of sportfishing boats as the featured marque for 2017. Pat Rybovich, the daughter of boatbuilder and designer Tommy Rybovich, will give a talk at 5:30 Saturday on her family’s American company that created the modern sportfishing yacht in the 1940s. She has documented the rich history in Rybovich: The Stuff of Legend, and is also writing a screenplay.
Take a step back in history on the elegant 100-foot classic fantail Electra, designed by Ted Geary, and 85-foot schooner Astor, built in 1923 by William Fife & Sons. The luxurious motoryacht has traveled the world and made her television debut on Melrose Place. A limited number of cruise tickets will be available for rides on Curlew, a sleek 82-foot historic schooner designed by John Alden.
It all starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10. There will be lively music, food and beverages for sale, entertainment and activities in the Maritime Village, which will showcase nautical art, products, activities and organizations. Best-in-Class and Choice Awards will be announced at a 4:30 ceremony. Visitors can park at Corporate Plaza and take a free shuttle to the Balboa Yacht Club. There is limited street parking. Or, ride a water taxi to the event from several points throughout Newport Harbor.
Sunday, June 11, man the waterfront to watch the 10:30 am Heritage Boat Parade, followed by a Heritage Sail By in Newport Harbor. To discover all the special weekend activities planned, visit www.newportbeachwoodenboatfestival.com.

Black sole shoes leave scuff marks. Wear proper boat shoes or expect to take off those hard soles before boarding each boat.
