Best Sailboat
Sumatra is one of six Lapworth 50’s designed by Bill Lapworth and built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard in 1961. Her hull is strip planked mahogany over hardwood frames. In 1963 LA architect Albert Martin purchased Sumatra and replaced her canoe stern with a reverse transom to extend her water line. For 20 years, she raced under the Los Angeles Yacht Club burgee, did six Transpac races, a Tahiti race and over 30 Mexico races. Her current owners purchased her in 2003, completely restoring and modernizing her with new electrical systems, sails, rigging, instrumentation, and a new Yanmar diesel. Her interior was completely reworked and she maintains her original style. Sumatra is owned by three avid sailors and wooden boat enthusiasts and races and cruises.
Owners: Will Durant & John Carpenter
So happy to see Sumatra is still sailing. My most cherished memories are Sailing with my dad and grandfather Al on Sumatra. Thank You for taking such good care of her.

I owned Sumartra for 10 years and she was the best boat. We got second place in the 1983 Newport to Ensnada race which was the largest ,about 820 boats. We always did great in all the race’s. I miss the boat greatly. Good to see she’s. In the best of hands. Also Al Martin was a great man and we were so greatful to buy the boat form him.Sumarta gave us great enjoyment over the years. She is the best
Lovely boat. i am wondering if the aft sections were changed to eliminate the big wake the original design kicks up at hull speed (noticed this while watching a video of sistership Westward finishing a Transpac under spinnaker)?
