Founder & Director of the Western Flyer Foundation, BYC Member
John Gregg has been involved in the geotechnical and environmental sampling business for 40 years. He was the founder and President of Gregg Drilling & Testing, Inc., and is currently involved in the design and implementation of deep-sea sampling systems at great depths in oceans around the world. When John was ten years old, he picked up a copy of Steinbeck’s The Log from the Sea of Cortez and was forever changed by it. In 2015, he purchased the famous boat from that expedition and founded the Western Flyer Foundation to continue the legacy started by Steinbeck and his friend Ed Ricketts back in 1940. We are honored to have John join us on Saturday to share the story of the renovation and outfitting of this storied vessel for her new mission which is “to stir curiosity through marine research, education, and a blend of science and art.

"All Hands On Deck" is a memoir by Will Sofrin who sailed the replica tall ship “Rose” from Newport Rhode Island to San Diego to make “Master & Commander” for Paramount Studios. The author calls it a high seas adventure through storms and rogue waves. Will worked as the shipwright to get the boat ready for the transit and oversaw repairs while underway. He is a resident of Santa Barbara and well known in many wooden boat communities. He will share his experience of the journey of the Rose from renovation to film.

Her work has been featured on the cover of Southwest Art Magazine, in Art of the West, Plein Air and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazines. She has been exhibited in over 25 museums and is widely known and collected locally from her gallery on Balboa Island. She loves the harbor and its life. She has agreed to share her experiences and insight to capturing the beauty and character of wooden boats on canvas.
