Painted Lady is Thistle number 643. She was built in 1951. Matt Foreman found her in a barn in Ohio in 1986 and have been improving her ever since. This class, designed by Sandy Douglas, was started in 1946 and is now the largest one design class in the US with over 4,000 boats. Actively raced, the old “woodies” are still very competitive with the modern fiberglass boats. Painted Lady still wins more than her share of races against brand new boats.
I bought 643 in early 60’s sold it to Mat Forman in Columbus about 1985. The gentman I bought it from did not sail it much. It was in show room condition when I had it varnished inside and out. I miss it and I am building a 11″ rep. of it and I would be happy to send pictures of model if anyone is interested.
