A special program on the life and legacy of Dennis L. Holland: the Man, his Ships and a Legacy of History. Journalist Eric Longabardi and Dennis Holland Jr. the only son of the late longtime Newport-Mesa resident Dennis Sr. will present a program that will feature the life and times of master shipwright and local resident Dennis L. Holland. Holland’s iconic life was centered around building, restoring, and preserving boats, autos and other pieces of history. The centerpiece of that story is the 118-ft tall ship “The Pilgrim of Newport” that Holland built himself in his front yard over a 13 year period between 1970-1983. Holland passed away in 2014 after a long battle with cancer.

this is for Dennis …did your father ever know Squeaky, the eunuch that wore Portugese bloomers, rode a bike around Newport, & single handed built a 50 foot schooner on a lot at the corner of Broad St & Westminster Ave about 1949? I remember he hewed the keel & stem with an adze & constructed a steam box to shape planking…like your dad, he did every task down to caulking & painting…I think the name of the ship was Elizabeth Badger & it was berthed near the Sea Scout base & for years they didn’t step the masts, but lived aboard…
I believe the boat you are talking about was the schooner “Sheridan S. Badger” owned by a commercial illustrator named Stan Badge who lived aboard in the Bayshore marina in 1958 and 1959. I worked on the boat during a couple of haul outs and Squeaky was Stan’s shipwright.
Hello Ed, sorry I did not reply sooner. Thank you for the history up-date. The ship originally was named Elizabeth W. Badger & was berthed, un-masted, at the Bayshore Marina. Then one year the name was changed, divorce? I always wondered what became of Squeaky?
