Bill Dunlap’s 16 foot rowing-sailing boat was built in 2014, but is rich in American maritime history. Adapted from the rowing wherry of England, vintage 1690, the refinement and innovation of this design has produced a vessel that exhibits both speed and stability whether rowing or sailing. The classic Whitehall design was modified for the particular local. The New York Whitehall was the benchmark and the vessels could be seen traversing orts and bays throughout the United States from the 1830’s to the 1860’s. The fine lines of the boat with its plumb bow, slack bilges and flared sides made them the hot rods of the harbors. The after sections were slightly hollow at the garboards and with their wine glass transom, they were a beauty to the eye. The Whitehall was traditionally lap-straked plank using cedar. The stem and keel are made of oak. Joyous is painted with white topsides, the interior were finished bright.
