4th Annual Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival
The Wooden Boat Festival (WBF) is an annual community event, open to the public.
Its mission is to honor and celebrate the heritage and the craftsmanship of wooden boats.  A portion of the proceeds from the event will support the Balboa Yacht Club (BYC) Competitive Edge Fund for youth and other maritime programs.  Please join us in celebrating this heritage with our community at this year’s 4th annual event.
Dates & Times
Friday, June 9, 2017
  • 10 am – 6 pm Boat Entrant Check-in, packets, swag bag and boat placement.
  • 5 pm  – 6:30 pm VIP Welcome Reception aboard 100’ classic 1929 M/V Electra (details to follow).
Saturday, June 10, 2017
  • 7-9:30 am Final Set-up
  • 10:00 am Open to the Public
  • 10 am-3 pm People’s Choice Voting
  • 4:30-5 pm Awards Celebration
  • 5:30 pm End of Public Viewing Event (Boats can stay until 12:30 pm June 11, 2017)
  • 5:30 pm Pat Rybovich Speaking Event.

  • 11:00 am Wooden Boat Parade (participation optional) – 90 minutes around Newport Harbor.
    All boats and exhibitors must have removed all their property from BYC grounds.
  • 1:00 pm Newport Harbor Heritage Sail-By (participation optional).  Details to follow.

Festival Details


Participation in the Wooden Boat Festival is by invitation. Wooden boats must be show-ready. The “Early- Bird” application deadline is 5:00 pm PST, Friday, April 14, 2017. Save $50 by entering by this date. The application fee is $100 after April 14. The application must be complete and include the items indicated below:

  • Completed Application with signed Liability Release
  • Proof of Insurance
  • High Resolution (300 dpi minimum) Color Photograph of the Entry Boat
  • Paragraph write-up about the story and interesting history of your unique wooden boat

CHECK-IN Friday, June 9, 2017

Prior to the event you will be advised of a specific time window to bring your boat. Boat entrants must pick up check-in packets at CHECK-IN.  Every entry will receive a laminated reader board for their boat to prominently display in public view from dockside. Do Not Board, Please Remove Your Shoes, and/or Please Do Not Touch signage is available upon request. For Sale signs may not be displayed while at the event. Boat owners or brokers may have 8½” x 11” flyers on board to hand out to interested parties noting “Available”.


The WBF Logistics Committee will assign in-water and on-land spaces for Boat Entrants at its discretion. WBF has a limited number of spaces for both in-the-water and trailered vessels. Location will be assigned to accepted vessels based on their length, freeboard, beam and draft, the date the complete application was received and applicable special requirements.


All exhibitors must wear their WBF badge while on BYC grounds.


No vehicles are allowed on site after 9 am Saturday, June 10, 2017. There will be no street parking. No vehicles may be left unattended on BYC grounds at any time. A shuttle between the Wooden Boat Festival and an off-site parking area will run all day Saturday, June 10, 2017.


Festival visitors will vote for their favorite boat in each class. A minimum of 3 boats are required to establish a class. Classes may be modified at the Festival Committee’s discretion.

Some categories may have a distinction between Professional vs Owner maintained.


Space is limited and applications are considered on several factors including but not limited to the boats merit, new or previous exhibitorship, the number of boats on display, and timely receipt of the application. The selection committee reserves the right to reject an application at its discretion. Accepted applicants will be notified of their acceptance and invited by email and/or telephone after May 1, 2017 to bring their boat to BYC on Friday, June 9 to exhibit at the WBF.  Boat owner must provide the documentation listed under the Eligibility Section and provide the specifications and history write-up for the featured vessel as set forth on pages 1 & 2 of this Application. All boats must be ready for visitors by 9 am Saturday morning June 10, 2017 and will remain until 6 pm that day. If you do not want visitors on board, please let us know and we will provide signage advising the public of viewing privileges only.  Boat Sitters are available to help watch over your boat.



The Wooden Boat Festival is held on the waterfront at Balboa Yacht Club, 1801 Bayside Drive, Corona del Mar, CA 92625.

Terms and Conditions - Release of Liability

The vessel Owner/Exhibitor (Owner) agrees that Balboa Yacht Club, its Officers, Directors, Committee Members, volunteers and staff (BYC), will be held harmless from liability for damages arising from any accident caused by Owner, Owner’s guests or Owner’s vessel, including injury to Owner or damage to Owner’s property, and that Owner’s participation in this event is entirely at Owner’s risk. Owner will be responsible for any damage to BYC property and any other owner/exhibitor’s property, BYC will not accept any liability for property damage or personal injury or death sustained prior to, during, or after the event.
