Newport Beach, CA: The First Annual Balboa Yacht Club Wooden Boat Festival kicks off Saturday, June 7, 2014. The public is invited for free to celebrate the maritime heritage of Newport Harbor and wooden boats past and present. BYC is continuing the tradition of waterfront festivals by providing a yearly gathering place for people to come and enjoy the rich history and character of wooden boats in our harbor and on the ocean. The Newport Beach community is home to over 9,000 pleasure boats for racing and cruising.

BYC BurgeeThe 2014 Festival will bring maritime life alive by showcasing 50 exceptional wooden boats of all shapes and sizes in the water and on land. Experienced boaters as well as novices will come together to enjoy maritime art, savory food, and lively music. Nautical displays of craftsmanship and wares will be exhibited. The Festival will conclude with a 4 p.m. awards ceremony to honor best–in-class power, sail and human-powered wooden vessels.

Since its founding in 1922, the Balboa Yacht Club has encouraged yacht racing and cruising, promoted the science of seamanship and navigation, and hosted members, families and guests at its waterfront clubhouse and marina for educational, recreational and social purposes. The Club also maintains a one-of-a-kind outstation at Whites Cove, on Santa Catalina Island. Its year-around Junior Sailing Program for 6 to 18 year olds accommodates all levels of experience, from learning to sail to advanced racing. The highly qualified instructors emphasize fun and safety, based on proven curriculum from US Sailing. Net proceeds from the annual event will help ensure that respect for the sea and our rich boating heritage is enjoyed, preserved, and passed along to future generations.

It all starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7. Visitors can park at Newport Beach Country Club and take a free shuttle to the Balboa Yacht Club.
