The annual Balboa Yacht Club Wooden Boat Festival takes place the first Saturday in June at the Club’s waterfront location in Newport Beach. The first annual event was held on June 7, 2014, and is growing yearly. It is one of about 25 nationwide to honor wooden boating, the craftsmanship, devotion and skill of those involved in preserving and promoting our nautical heritage.

2016 Entry Application


Participation is by invitation. Boat owners are invited to submit an application to be reviewed by the selection committee. Space is limited and several factors are considered for in selecting the boats to showcase, including, but not limited to the boat’s merit, new or previous exhibitorship, the number of boats that can be accommodated, and timely receipt of the application. The selection committee reserves the right to reject an application at its discretion. The early-bird application deadline is 5:00 pm PST, Friday, March 18, 2016, for a $50 discount of the $100 application fee.

  • Accepted applicants will be invited by email and/or telephone by April 15, 2016.
  • Entrants will arrive at BYC on Friday, June 3, ready to exhibit by 9:00 am on June 4 until 5:00 pm.
  • Boats can depart after 5:00 pm Saturday until 10 am Sunday, June 5, 2016.


Friday, June 3, 2016

  • Noon – 6 pm   Boat entrants Check-In, receive participant packets, and boats are put in place
  • 6 – 8 pm  Welcome Reception (Details to follow)

Saturday, June 4, 2016

  • 7-9:30 am Final Set-up
  • 10:00 am Open to the Public
  • 10 am-2 pm People’s Choice Voting
  • 4-4:30 pm Awards Celebration
  • 5:00 pm End of Public View Event (Boats can stay until 10am June 5th, 2016)

Sunday, June 5, 2016

  • 10:00 am Parade of Entries (participation optional) – 90 minutes around Newport Harbor.
  • All boats and exhibitors must have removed all of their property and refuse from BYC grounds


On Friday, June 3, 2016 Boat Entrants must pick up check-in packets at Check-In for assigned dock/space assignment.


The WBF Logistics Committee will assign in-water and on-land spaces for Boat Entrants at its discretion. WBF has a limited number of spaces for both in-the-water and trailered vessels. Location will be assigned to accepted vessels based on their size, beam and draft, the date the complete application was received and applicable special requirements.


All exhibitors must wear their WBF badge while on BYC grounds.


No vehicles are allowed on site after 9 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016. There will be no street parking. No vehicles may be left unattended on BYC grounds at any time. A shuttle between the Wooden Boat Festival at BYC and the off-site parking area will run all day Saturday, June 4, 2016.


All attendees are invited to vote for their favorite boat in each category for People’s Choice awards presented at 4:00 pm on Saturday, June 4, 2016. Ballots will be available throughout the event until 2:00 pm.

Top honors and Best Powerboat, Best Sailboat, Best Human Powered and Best of Show trophies will be awarded by the Newport Beach Mayor, Orange County Sheriff Department’s Harbor Patrol Commander, Balboa Yacht Club Commodore and Festival Chair.


A portion of the proceeds from the event will support the BYC Competitive Edge Fund for youth sailing programs, and ALS Therapy Development Institute to support the discovery and development of effective treatments to end amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s Disease.



Space is limited and applications are considered on a number of factors including but not limited to the boats merit, new or previous exhibitorship, limit to the number of boats on display, and timely receipt of the application. The selection Committee reserves the right to reject an application at its discretion. Accepted applicants will be notified of their acceptance and invited by email and/or telephone by April 15, 2016 to bring their boat to BYC on Friday, June 3 to exhibit on June 4, 2016. Boat owner must provide the documentation as listed under the Eligibility Section and provide the specifications and history write-up for the featured vessel as set forth on the Boat Entrant’s Application. All boats must be ready for visitors by 9 am Saturday morning June 4, 2016 and will remain until 5 pm that day. If you do not want visitors on board, please let us know and we will provide signage advising the public of viewing privileges only.


The vessel Owner/Exhibitor (Owner) agrees that Balboa Yacht Club, its Officers, Directors, Committee Members, volunteers and staff (BYC), will be held harmless from liability for damages arising from any accident caused by Owner, Owner’s guests or Owner’s vessel, including injury to Owner or damage to Owner’s property, and that Owner’s participation in this event is entirely at Owner’s risk. Owner will be responsible for any damage to BYC property and any other owner/exhibitor’s property, BYC will not accept any liability for property damage or personal injury or death sustained prior to, during, or after the event.
