The 1961 Kettenburg K-40 Antares is owned by Steve Guilford, Commodore of the Wooden Hull Yacht Club. He purchased #32 from a high school friend. He didn’t mean to do it. He knew little about sailing, but wasn’t one to shy away from an intriguing challenge, With the help of friends and family, Guilford quickly learned how to sail and became an advocate for wooden boats. In 2006, Antares underwent a major refit, getting new sails and rigging.
As might be expected, a significant amount of hull work was undertaken as well. He is most appreciative of the contributions of Fred Huffman (rigging), Oliver McCann (UK Halsey Sails), Mark Shutts (Shutt’s Fabrication), and Arturo Oliva (windward Yacht Center). Antares is a competitive boat. Her recent race record at the McNish Classic, Oxnard, California, is: First Place Sloop B in 2010 and 2011; Second Place Sloop A in 2012; and first place Sloop A in 2013.
